In just a few days, Oklahoma students will head back to the classroom for a new school year. This weekend, many families will head to local stores to prepare.
For many, that means new clothes, new backpacks and a cart full of those school supplies, checking off the lists provided by teachers.
Oklahoma lawmakers have thrown a gift to those families through the form of a sales tax holiday – Tax-Free Weekend. Clothes and shoes that cost less than $100 are tax-free this weekend.
We’re thankful for that break, but the Legislature left a glaring and arguably more meaningful gap in the law. Tax-Free Weekend doesn’t include the most essential item – school supplies.
